Why the Brain

Some refer to the brain as the “final frontier” of scientific discovery because so much remains to be understood about its principles and function. Throughout history, philosophers, scientists, and medical professionals have been fascinated by our mental processes, and have pondered how humans are distinguished from other living beings. Recent advances in technology have provided tools that are helping scientists understand the biological basis of higher level brain functions such as memory, thought, and speech.

The healthy brain is responsible for our consciousness, emotion, creativity, sensory perception, intelligence, imagination, and mental health. All these functions are often taken for granted until improper functioning leads to ailment or disease. Millions of people are devastated by neurological diseases through out the world. Brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, depression, schizophrenia, dyslexia, and autism, can be debilitating and indeed devastating for individuals and their families.

At The Neurosciences Institute we are conducting fundamental research that will enable us to understand the functioning of the healthy brain in order to shed light on dysfunctions that lead to disease. It is imperative to continue research efforts to understand how the brain works at the most basic level if we are to uncover insights that may help us correct problems in the brain.

It is our goal at The Neurosciences Institute to recruit the brightest scientists in the field and provide them with a nurturing environment that allows them to pursue the most important questions in neuroscience.
