APPLICATION PROCEDURES:1) Fellows in Theoretical or Experimental Neurobiology
Applications for full-time Fellows positions should include a short statement of research interests, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and the names of three people familiar with the applicant's work who would be willing to serve as references. There are no specific deadlines for the receipt of applications. Because the number of positions available at any one time is strictly limited, the process is highly competitive.
Applications are reviewed by a Selection Committee; some applicants may be invited to the Institute for personal interviews.
The Institute's research program encourages productive interactions among scientists from different disciplines who are studying related problems.
Ample opportunities for such interactions are provided not only within the group of Fellows, but also with visiting Fellows and other scientists taking part in the Institute's conference programs. The Selection Committee will give preference to those applicants who, in the Committee's judgment, will make the most creative contributions to the Institute's research program and who will be most likely to continue successful research after the end of the Fellowship period. All decisions of the Selection Committee are final.
Applicants for the position of Senior Fellow are expected to have an extensive background comparable to that of an associate or full professor in a major academic institution. Applicants for the position of Postdoctoral Fellow typically will have received a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) within one year of appointment. Applicants for the position of Associate Fellow will have experience levels intermediate between those of Postdoctoral and Senior Fellows.
Stipends for all positions are competitive with similar positions at other institutions and will depend on qualifications and experience; employment benefits, including medical and dental insurance plans and paid vacation, are provided.
Applicants are expected to have experience in one or more areas of research relevant to the overall goal of the Institute, which is to further understanding of the biological bases of brain and nervous system function.
Preference will be given to applicants whose interests complement those of current Fellows. Broad areas of experimental study include molecular and cell biology, neuroembryology, cellular and systems neurophysiology, and dynamic brain imaging by magnetoencephalography. Theoretical work is focused on obtaining a better understanding of how perception, memory, and other aspects of higher brain functions are manifested as a result of elementary activity in the nervous system. An important part of this work uses real-world devices with simulated nervous systems that learn to behave through interaction with their environment. For specific information on past and current research, see the Research Activities section.
Appropriate salary and research support for Fellows is provided from general funds available to the Institute for this purpose. Individual Fellows are not expected to provide their own support, but they are expected to cooperate in various fundraising and public information efforts.
Application materials should be sent to the attention of Dr. W. Einar Gall, Research Director, or to the specific contact indicated in the Positions Available listing. E-mail submissions may also be made to jobs@nsi.edu. The Selection Committee will contact those applicants with whom it wishes to pursue discussions; the receipt of an application will not necessarily be acknowledged.
